Research at the 1st Faculty of Medicine is funded from national and international sources including European Union Structural and Investment Funds, national and international grant agencies, and funds from private and corporate sources (e.g. foundations).

European Union Structural and Investment Funds significantly contributed in realization and development of several important research facilities and projects at the 1st Faculty of Medicine which include:

Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre in Vestec (BIOCEV) https://www.biocev.eu/en supported by the European Regional Development Fund. Joint project of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University to establish European center of excellence in biomedicine and biotechnology. First Faculty of Medicine participate particularly at the programs Development of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures, Cellular Biology and Virology, Functional Genomics, and Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. The research projects of the First Medical faculty are carried out in the laboratories of the Department BIOCEV 1. LF UK and BIOCEV laboratories of the Institutes of Anatomy, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathophysiology, and Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine https://biocev.lf1.cuni.cz/ .

Centre for Advanced Preclinical Imaging (CAPI) https://capi.lf1.cuni.cz/en : a top-notch facility supported by Operational Program Research and Development for Innovation (OP RDI) and enabling various form of visualization in experimental animals including CT, MRI, PET/SPECT and MPI. The center is integrated in the pan-European research infrastructure EUROBIOIMAGING.

The National Center for Medical Genomics (NCMG) https://ncmg.cz/en is a distributed scientific infrastructure, which consists of the genomic laboratories of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University in Prague, General University Hospital in Prague, Motol University Hospital; BIOCEV; Department of Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology (IHOK) and Centre of molecular biology and gene therapy (CMBGT) at University Hospital Brno; Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) at Masaryk University at Brno; Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine at Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Palacký University Olomouc; University Hospital in Pilsen. The objective of NCMG is to provide for an operation of next generation sequencing platforms and subsequent technologies for analysis of human genomes and to allow qualified usage of these technologies in biomedical research and translational medicine in Czech Republic.

Center for Tumor Ecology – research on the cancer microenvironment supported cancer growth and spread. https://www.lf1.cuni.cz/centrum-nadorove-ekologie-vyzkum-nadoroveho-mikroprostredi-v-organizmu-podporujiciho-rust-a-sireni-nadoru (in Czech). The project is focusing on the cancer stroma as a potential target for cancer therapy.
