Applicants are accepted for a study in doctoral study programmes based on an admissions process, which takes place separately for the individual study programmes at the relevant faculties at a time announced by the rector, usually in June.
The beginning of admissions process is announced by the faculties publicly at least 4 months before application deadline using their official board. At the same time, the faculties also inform the Rectorate of the Charles University.
The dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University announces for academic year 2024/2025 admissions procedures for both full-time and combined form of doctoral study programmes.
- Doctoral study programmes in biomedicine take place based on a Framework Agreement Between the Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
- Other doctoral study programmes
Admission examinations take the form of an interview with examination committees. These committees are appointed by the dean of the faculty at the suggestion of the chairperson of the relevant Field Board. They usually include members of the relevant Field Board. Examination committees are usually headed by the chairperson of the relevant Field Board. Admission interview may include a discussion about the proposed PhD project and conditions needed for its implementation. It is also required that the proposed thesis supervisor be present at the interview (see A List of Supervisors at the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University). The exact dates of entrance interviews for doctoral study programmes can be found HERE (will be published after they have been set by the relevant subject-area board during the month of April 2024).
Admission committee then votes on the result of the admissions examination. In case the votes are split evenly, the chairperson’s vote is decisive. Admission examination is classified as either ‘accepted’ or ‘not accepted’. In case the number of applicants is higher than the number of positions, the committee compiles a ranking.
The chairperson of the admission committee submits a record about the outcome of the admission examination to the dean within three days of the interview. The Dean’s Office then notifies the applicant within 30 days of the admission examination about the outcome of the interview. Applicant may appeal against this decision within 30 days of its delivery to the rector of the Charles University via the dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine.
Further particulars are regulated by the Code of Admission Procedure for Applicants.
