Emblem of the First Faculty of Medicine

The heraldic rendering of a pelican with her offspring is one of the frequently used alegories of Medicine. According to tales from the middle ages, the behaviour of pelicans is highly altruistic since they prevent their chicks from starvating by pecking the skin on their own breast to feed their offspring from their own blood. Even though this poetic and romantic idea is far from 51947 reality, it remains highly impressive.

The silver statuette of a pelican with three chicks could be recognized on the ancient scepter of the Prague Faculty of Medicine. According to its style, the ancient scepter probably dates to the baroque period, which was attached to the older gothic scepter. In the modern period is the seal used on a medal, awarded by the Minister of Health to outstanding physicians.
The First Faculty of Medicine uses the Official Seal on its diplomas, commemorative documents, ceremonial occasions, as well as for decoration during festive gatherings.

The seal seal depicts a heraldically styled pelican with three chicks that is circularly surrounded by lettering in Latin reading FACVLTAS MEDICA VNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE in Gothic Majuscle font type. Acanthus leaves and gems along the circumference of the lettering are also derived from the decorations on the ancient scepter of the Faculty. This iconography and graphic style remind us of the old tradition of the Faculty of Medicine in Prague.
