Our faculty’s main goal is to provide our students with all the skills and knowledge they will need to practice medicine and practice it well. To educate professionals who have an understanding of biochemical sciences, a sense of responsibility for basic human values, people who can hold their own in the international arena.
The leader representing the Faculty is the
Dean who reports to the Rector of the Charles University. Some of
the specific tasks are delegated to the Vice-Deans. Together with representatives of other parts of the Faculty
they form a pro-active advisory board – the Dean's Board. More about organization HERE.
The faculty is not just school, learning, memorising, and exams. There is also life around it, people, students and teachers. Students who have fun, meet, organise various events, travel abroad. Many engage in scientific work even during their studies. Large part of what life at the faculty is like depends on students and teachers themselves. On what they manage to organise.
First Faculty of Medicine with almost 1 200 staff members and 3 400 students represents the largest medical faculty in the Czech Republic. It is one of the 17 faculties and an integral part of Charles University from its foundation by the King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles the Fourth in 1348. As such, it is also the oldest medical faculty in Central Europe.
Medicine was taught at the Prague university probably since its foundation. The earliest surviving records of examinations in medicine date to 1353. Nevertheless, for about two decades after the university’s foundation, a medical school existed more in name than in reality. At that time, several professors appointed from the ranks of royal physicians taught a handful of students in their own residences. More.
