Competition for PhD students “Ma these en 180 secondes”

The Embassy of France in Czech Republic is pleased to remind you that the first stage of the "Ma these en 180 secondes” competition across Central Europe will be happening in Prague on April 16, 2026.

PhD students can apply until April 6, 2026, via the registration form.

The national round (for students enrolled in the Czech Republic) is organized by Charles University, the Gallica association and the French Institute in Prague, with the support of the Embassy of Belgium the Embassy of Canada, and the Embassy of Switzerland in the Czech Republic. The event will be held at the French Institute on April 16, 2026.

The best candidates will then participate in the Central Europe regional selection, which will take place in Vienna on June 17.

This scientific communication and public speaking competition is open to any French-speaking PhD student enrolled in a Czech university for the academic year 2025-2026, as well as those who have obtained their doctorate after August 2025. In a maximum of three minutes, candidates will have to present their thesis in French, using a single slide and try to convince the jury and the public.

The competition “Ma these en 180 secondes” allows doctoral students to talk about their research work to a non-specialist audience by learning how to explain a complex subject in simple terms. From mathematics and literature to biology and architecture, it is open to all disciplines. You can find more information about the competition on the website of French Institute in Prague.

As the competition takes place exclusively in French, it is asked to communicate in French.
