Congratulations to the newly appointed professors!

President Petr Pavel presented appointment decrees to 28 new professors of Charles University, of whom 7 are from the First Faculty of Medicine.

Lucie Muchová, in the field of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry. A physician, biochemist, and university lecturer working at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics, CU 1ST MED. Her research has long focused on heme and bilirubin metabolism, the biological effects of carbon monoxide, and their significance for human health and disease. She completed research at Stanford University School of Medicine in the USA and is among the leading Czech experts in experimental biochemistry and hepatology. She is the author of highly cited scientific papers, a member of doctoral study program boards, and of the Charles University Grant Agency.

Martin Anders, in the field of Psychiatry. A psychiatrist and university lecturer working at the Department of Psychiatry, CU 1ST MED and VFN in Prague, where he has served as Head since 2020. His expertise focuses on affective disorders, anxiety disorders, biological psychiatry, and the reform of psychiatric care. He has long contributed to the development of clinical guidelines, the education of psychiatrists, and the advancement of modern community psychiatric care in the Czech Republic. He is the author and co-author of numerous professional publications and the recipient of several awards from the Czech Psychiatric Society for his scientific and publishing activities.

Karel Černý, in the field of History of Medicine. A historian specializing in the history of medicine, healthcare, and epidemics in the early modern period. He works at the Institute of the History of Medicine and Foreign Languages, CU 1ST MED, which he has led since 2014. His research focuses on the spread of infectious diseases, health conditions, and medical knowledge in the Czech lands as well as in a broader European context. He is the author of numerous academic studies and monographs that connect historical research with current issues in medicine and public health, significantly contributing to the development of the field in the Czech Republic.

Milan Jakubek, in the field of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry. A chemist and biochemist at CU 1ST MED, where he leads the Medicinal Chemistry research group at the BIOCEV centre. His research focuses on the development of new drugs, nanotechnologies for medical applications, and the design of innovative drug delivery systems. He is the author of several patents and technological solutions, some of which have been successfully translated into practice as licensed products. He participates in international research projects, including Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020.

Martin Balík, in the field of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. An anaesthesiologist and intensivist working at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, CU 1ST MED and VFN in Prague, where he serves as Deputy Head. His expertise includes intensive care, acute cardiology, echocardiography, extracorporeal life support (ECMO), and the treatment of critically ill patients. He is actively involved in several European professional societies, contributes to international guidelines in intensive care medicine, and is among the leading Czech experts in critical care. He is the author of nearly two hundred scientific publications, holds a patent in intensive care medicine, and has received numerous national and international awards for his research.

Jiří Petrák, in the field of Experimental Biology of Animals. A molecular biologist and expert in proteomics working at the BIOCEV centre and CU 1ST MED, where he leads the Clinical Proteomics research group. His research focuses on expression proteomics, mass spectrometry, and the study of molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular and cancer diseases, particularly in relation to iron metabolism. He completed a postdoctoral fellowshipat the University of California, Berkeley, and has participated in numerous research projects aimed at identifying biomarkers for use in the diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases. He is the author of dozens of scientific publications and significantly contributes to the development of proteomics research in the Czech Republic.

Kamál Mezian, in the field of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. A physician specializing in rehabilitation and physical medicine working at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, CU 1ST MED and VFN in Prague. His expertise focuses on musculoskeletal medicine, pain management, ultrasound diagnostics of the musculoskeletal system, and modern rehabilitation approaches. Alongside his clinical and educational activities, he actively contributes to the development of the field through professional societies and has served since 2024 as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Rehabilitace a fyzikální lékařství. He is a respected expert in ultrasound-guided diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system and is involved in the education of physicians both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
