Frequently Asked Questions

 Core information

The First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, offers two full-time, English-taught integrated Master’s programmes: General Medicine (six years, MUDr.) and Dentistry (five years, MDDr.). General Medicine combines a foundation in medical sciences with clinical education, while Dentistry focuses on dental medicine throughout its curriculum.

Both programmes require in-person attendance at scheduled teaching and practical or clinical activities. Neither can be completed remotely or at a student's own pace.

The academic year includes scheduled teaching, practical activities and examination periods. Students have some flexibility in scheduling examinations within the applicable rules, but compulsory practical classes and clinical placements must be attended as scheduled.

The Faculty combines biomedical education, practical training and hospital-based clinical teaching in Prague. Students become part of an international university community.

During their studies, students have opportunities to gain international experience through Erasmus+ study exchanges, clinical traineeships and other international mobility programmes.

A degree from the Faculty provides a foundation for pursuing a medical or dental career internationally. However, it does not automatically confer a licence to practise in every country. Graduates planning to work abroad should check the relevant professional regulator's requirements, including registration, examinations, language proficiency and postgraduate training.

International students can access support through the International Office, including the Vice-Dean for International Studies and the study affairs team, as well as student organisations and mental-health support services.

Studying in Prague offers access to a major European university environment, safe and accessible, hospital-based learning and an international student community.

Quick Q&A

Can I study remotely, or is hybrid study available?

No. General Medicine and Dentistry are both full-time, in-person programmes.

Is the Faculty accredited and will my degree be accepted in India, the UK, the USA or Canada?

The General Medicine and Dentistry programmes are accredited in the Czech Republic. The Faculty's degrees are internationally recognised academic qualifications and provide a solid foundation for pursuing medical or dental careers worldwide. Our graduates have gone on to work in countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, India and the UAE.

However, recognition of a degree does not automatically grant a licence to practise. Professional registration, licensing examinations, language requirements and postgraduate training depend on the country in which you intend to work.

Is Dentistry simply a shorter version of General Medicine?

No. Dentistry is a distinct five-year professional degree, while General Medicine is a six-year medical degree. Your choice should depend on the profession you wish to pursue, not simply the programme's duration.

Will I meet patients and practise clinical skills?

Yes. Practical and clinical training are integral parts of both programmes. The timing and progression of simulation-based training, patient contact and hospital placements differ between the programmes.

Can I participate in research or exchange programmes?

Yes. Research and international exchange opportunities are available, subject to the eligibility requirements, timing and availability of places within the relevant programme or department.

Can international students study Medicine free of charge in Czech?

Yes. Admission requirements for both Czech-taught and English-taught programmes are programme-specific, not nationality-specific.

Czech-taught programmes are tuition-free, but both the entrance examination and the studies themselves are conducted entirely in Czech. Applicants who did not complete their secondary education in Czech must also provide a certificate demonstrating Czech-language proficiency at C1 level, in addition to meeting the same admission requirements as Czech applicants.

Can I stay in Czechia for residency after graduation?

Potentially, yes. Graduates of our English-taught programmes are subject to the same professional registration and postgraduate specialisation requirements as graduates of Czech-taught programmes. In addition, graduates of English-taught programmes must meet the applicable Czech-language requirements and, where relevant, immigration requirements.

Can a qualified doctor from abroad apply directly for a Czech residency through this admissions office?

No. Postgraduate medical training and recognition of foreign medical qualifications follow separate procedures. This admissions office handles applications to the English-taught General Medicine and Dentistry degree programmes, not postgraduate residency applications.
